Have you “squirted” with your Zune as of yet? Don’t know what it means to “squirt”? Don’t worry - I never heard of it until I read this article over at Newsweek (which is at MSNBC.com). Apparently squirting is the act of sending a song over WiFi from one Zune to another. (Does anyone else think this term’s a bit sketchy? I just squirted you.. hmmm)
Anyhow, this article over at Newsweek believes in the notion of squirting but the author feels that Microsoft should have pushed the envelope a bit further. Sending a song over WiFi is pretty cool but the whole three days or three plays limitation is a real deal killer at times. What’s particularly annoying IMHO is for Zune Pass subscribers - if a Zune Pass subscriber squirts a song to another Zune Pass subscriber, that other subscriber should be able to just hold onto the song. He/she’s going to get it anyhow as part of their subscription right? Sure there are some technical hurdles to make sure the song’s DRM is now attached to the new user but come on.. not impossible to perform!
But the real point of the Newsweek article is - Microsoft could have done so much more with the WiFi capabilities. It’s one thing to send a song or an album or a picture. It’s another thing if one could view the album collection on another Zune. Right now, I can see what some other Zune is playing at that moment in time. What I would really like to know is - what is the music collection of the other Zune? Maybe - just maybe, I might like their music. That would be an ideal extension to the whole wireless capabilities.
Hopefully, Microsoft is listening to these reviews and articles about the Zune. Yes there are some harsh words - but there are also many balanced viewpoints out there too.

I agree about wanting more WiFi connectivity. I think it’d be cool to have a lot more functionality controlled via the Zune. It’d feel even more related to my digital life that way.
Have you tried out Feed Your Zune? It lets you see great programming guides of the best independent internet TV shows, like the stuff from Network2. I’d love to see what you think about that service.

hey this is pretty cool. How did they manage to hook into the Zune software ? I wasn’t aware any Zune SDK’s were made available at this time.

Did Microsoft come up with the lame term “squirting”? Not a very cool, techy sounding term. Makes me think of some one taking a piss, a slow one at that. Even the product name “Zune” is kind of lame. Sounds like a slepping pill from a pharmacutical company. If Microsoft hopes to make any headway with this product they should hire a decent advertising agency to help them.

[...] I can’t wait until I get home so that I can wirelessly squirt songs to no-one. (Don’t even bother. All the jokes have been said already. Seriously. Because my plane arrived so late, by the time I got here any attempt at poking humour at the silly Zune marketing was met with “yeah, that’s old news.” :() [...]

Zunes! Get ‘em while they’re, um, hot . . ….
Woot!, the wonderful, one-day/one-item Web site, apparently has scored a boatload o’ Zunes — Microsoft’s MP3 player – and are selling them for $149.99. That’s about $100 less than a Zune normally goes for, and is a deeper discount than …
