Phaleux.com has figured out a way to access a Microsoft Zune via the Windows Explorer shell. The “hack” requires changes to the Windows registry as described here

at Phaleux.com. I’ve copied the text from that site here for those too lazy to click through.

Make sure your Zune is not plugged in and your Zune software isn’t running

  1. open up regedit by going to the start menu and selecting “run”. Type regedt32 and hit “OK”
  2. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Enum\USB\
  3. Search for “PortableDeviceNameSpace”. This should be contained in the Vid_####&Pid_####\########_-_########_-_########_-_########\Device Parameters within the above …\USB\ The ##’s listed here will be numbers and letters specific to your Zune
  4. Change the following values:
    • EnableLegacySupport to 1
    • PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell to 0
    • ShowInShell to 1
  5. Plug in your Zune, and make sure the Zune Software starts up.
  6. Hopefully at this point you can open up “My Computer” and browse your device, though it does NOT show up as a drive letter.

There are several things to keep in mind before proceeding. ONE - you’re going to muck with the registry so PLEASE be careful. One wrong move and you could royally screw your system. TWO - Make sure to backup the registry before doing this. At least backup the key in question so you can restore it later on.

In any case, this is a great hack for anyone looking to use the Zune as an external portable hard drive (something Microsoft should have enabled anyhow!)

Thanks Phaleux!
