As most of you already know, the number of hacks associated to the Zune have been growing day by day. The latest set of interesting hacks are around the wireless sharing of music and files. First off - thanks to Gizmodo for posting about these hacks. (Here’s an interesting thought.. if there are hacks for the Zune, that means there MUST be people purchasing the Zune right?? oh well.)
Hack # 1 - Share the same song over and over again between two people. What do you need to do? Simple.. you just tell Zune that you don’t know a thing about the person who just shared you that song. Here are the steps as quoted from Gizmodo:
1. Make sure that your Zune is connected and the Zune Software is running.
2. Navigate to My Computer and click on your Zune’s name.
3. Open “Storage”
4. Find the file that contains the name of the user who transferred songs to you in the file name, and delete all records with that title.
5. Get the other party to do the same and you can now transfer the same songs again!
Simple enough.
In another hack, you can bypass the DRM feature of the wireless sharing simply by changing the extension of the file to have a “.jpg” extension (signifying JPEG). Since the Zune doesn’t apply DRM to JPEG files, you can transfer practically anything between two Zunes without worrying about file sharing restrictions. The only caveat to making this work is - you need to execute the Windows registry hack to allow the Zune to be viewed as an external hard drive. Oh yeah - one more thing - you need to send the folder containing the files - not the file itself. Check out this page at Gizmodo for more info.
