Proving yet again that Linux can be run on nearly any device out there, an administrator over at Zune Boards has made significant progress towards getting Linux to operate successfully on the Zune. There are still several bugs to be worked through and the OS only boots when synced but it’s getting there according to “Mys Videl” on the Zune Boards here.

So why run Linux on the Zune? Well here are some of the reasons quoted from Mys Videl:

  • Linux on the Zune will just be plain sexy.
  • It will allow us to add our own new features and programs.
  • It will give people more options instead of just what Microsoft wants.
  • It will make the Zune in to a portable hard drive
  • It will give the anti-Windows people something to grin about.
  • Who can resist linux?

But consider - if Linux can be successfully deployed and operated on a Zune, Microsoft may end up having a new legion of fans for the Zune - granted they’re using it for different purposes than originally intended but it just might prop up the sales.
