Zune 30 After reading that article over at Wired.com about the popularity of the Zune media player, I thought I’d hop on over to Amazon.com and do a little un-scientific study of their bestsellers list for MP3 players (maybe because I wasn’t quite believing the bath water that the Zune was getting in the press).

Now if you head on over to the Bestseller’s list for all MP3 players here on Amazon.com, you’ll notice the top sellers all belong to Apple (not surprisingly).  In fact, you won’t find the Zune player until number 7 on the list. The top 7 for all MP3 players on Amazon.com are as follows (as of 11/28/2007):

  1. Apple 4GB iPod nano silver
  2. Apple 8GB iPod nano black
  3. SanDisk M240 1GB MP3 player in silver
  4. Apple 80GB iPod classic in Black
  5. Apple 1GB iPod shuffle purple
  6. Apple 8GB iPod nano blue
  7. Zune 30GB Brown

Now if you focus the list on only Hard Drive based MP3 players, you’ll see the following:

  1. Zune 30GB Brown
  2. Zune 30GB Black
  3. Apple 30GB iPod 5.5 Gen
  4. Creative Zen Vision W 30GB
  5. Creative Zen Vision:M 30GB
  6. Apple 80GB iPod 5.5 Gen

Thus when we focus the list down to hard drive only players, the Zune comes out ahead … yet.. that doesn’t quite jive with the first list which shows the Apple 80GB iPod classic in Black ahead of the Zune 30GB. What gives? The only thing we really don’t know is what time period (or ranges) these lists are monitoring (and what kind of algorithms Amazon is using for popularity).

In any case, it’s an interesting list (notice the Zune 80 is nowhere to be found? It’s impossible to find!!) - especially in light of the holiday shopping season.
